Windows Critical Update Validation Failure
Summary:
You are being re-directed to instructions on how to download and install critical updates from Microsoft.
Description:
Windows critical updates are required to be installed on all ResNet computers in order to gain internet access.
You are currently being placed in a Temporary Role with limited network access to perform the necessary updates. Depending on which updates are missing, you may be required to perform several reboots.
Q: It seems like I'm always installing updates. Is this normal?
A: Yes, Microsoft usually releases updates once a month. With Automatic Updates enabled your computer will retrieve these for you.
Q: I just did this, why am I still failing this requirement?
A: Some updates require a reboot before others can be installed. Thus, there will be times when you need to repeat these steps to get all critical updates.
Q: I just did this, why am I still failing this requirement after the Microsoft Windows Update site says there are no updates to install?
A: Due to bugs within Windows Update, some updates updates need to be manually installed and will not be detected when using Automatic updates. Visit this page to install updates manually. (This is only needed if Windows Automatic Updates fail.) In general, to avoid this problem you can select "Custom" instead of "Automatic (Recommended)" at the Welcome to Windows Update page, pictured in step 4 below this section. This requires you to choose which updates to install.
